In Dr. Scantlebury’s first book, Beyond Every Wall, she shares the amazing story of her journey to becoming America’s first African American, female transplant surgeon. You will smile, laugh, cry, and be inspired as you connect with the accounts that became her stepping stones to become a “1st”.  Here are a few excerpts from her book:

“…I was officially recognized by the City of Mobile with my own proclamation…there was even a day named after me, Velma Scantlebury Day – March 18th…”

and,

“My guidance counselor knew my academic record, but she did not know me.  She overlooked my potential.  To her, I had no promising future.  The darkness of my skin blinded her, my Caribbean accent and quiet demeanor deceived her…Her idea was to tailor my future, based on what she knew to be a Black person’s place…I did not want to be at her mercy.”
